Those currently suffering under enslavement have received no material benefit from this verdict whatsoever.

It's blatant woke symbolism, the sole purpose of which is to make the privileged white "educated" person feel good about his stance at no cost to himself.

Fair enough if you think that, Rios. I disagree and believe that context simply had to form part of the trial.

I know the communities I live and work in (not middle class/woke/unwashed or whatever adjectives the retorts will be) will be happy with the outcome.

Why do you find this symbol of the struggle against institutionalised white racism insulting and provocative enough to have a pop?

Or are you just having a reaction because you don’t like the liberal educated types who take a dim view of your white bloke inferiority complex?

As long as "they" keep it amongst themselves then it's not a problem.

Anybody fancy knocking down Nelson Mandela's statue? It's legal now.

We should all be thankful that the likes of Colston catalogued his business dealings. If other continents had done this properly then Colston would have been the tip of the iceberg on such matters WORLDWIDE.....but still.....we have our historical recorded stooges to blame it all on......even though it carries on today in other continents......this is why it's never going to be a breakthrough in matters of race and racism........because it's still allowed to go on.......it's more disgusting these swampys think they've changed anything.......they've just helped sweep it further under the carpet as they think they've made some sort of progress......changing history doesn't change the fact the atrocity is still going on and guess what the scumbags are not just white and never were......

No point reasoning with the prick, Pasty. He's a compulsive spreader of disinformation who will do anything to aggravate the division between normal people and white reactionaries who get triggered by this kind of thing.

Mob rule indeed - the statue was a long-standing provocation and an embarrassment; the Floyd murder just focussed that potential while now life goes as normal as juries issue their verdicts having heard the evidence in the courts of law.

This is why its a perverse judgment. The statue and 19th Century England were not on trial, the 4 people who caused criminal damage were.

'Of course I disagree. The mob didn't relocate the statue to a museum, they defaced it and threw it in the sea. It is criminal damage by definition, they had no permission to do this.'

Thats not what I asked is it .I didn't say what they did was right.

The statue has stood for a long time and only recently become 'controversial' because people like you say it is. Well, I say it isn't controversial. So we disagree and the status quo should have prevailed. Perhaps Bristol City Council should return all money received via the Colston charitable institutes and compensate his estate.

OK, fair enough, you don't think it's controversial. Thankfully the justice system disagreed.

If Bristol can't take it's assigned quota of illegal immigrants because it used the money it had put aside to do so sorting out the statue then there will be all hell to pay.

'Then there needs to be some form of public engagement before this happens. I would imagine that everything is rosy in Bristol, all public services fully funded and no waiting lists for housing or anything. Just making sure the council are dealing with their priorities correctly.'

Odd argument. I really don't agree. So we just leave it because the council don't have time? The debate has been kicking around for years. Clearly it shouldn't have been there. I really doubt you'd get anyone saying they really want it there. You might get some just saying they don't care. Surely you can see that it's not appropriate to have it there? And that it's more appropriate for it be where it is now. I am not suggesting we wipe out history.

I don't agree with the way it happened - I don't buy into the 'mob' narrative, nor do I buy into the 'hero' narrative - but it happened because no action had been taken before.

The people went through the justice system that we all abide to.The jury saw the wider picture. Case closed in my view.

Let's see if all hell bakes loose as a result.

The Egyptians also maintained the practise of bonded labour for skilled tradesmen, it differs from slavery as the labour was paid for and is even mentioned in the bible.

Current concensus is that the pyramids weren't built by slaves, but by free labour by farmers during the time when their fields were flooded by the Nile.

There are even accounts of strikes

Bristol is a shithole anyway and just shows you what happens to Towns/Cities that have universities.

Brighton is the same.

I’m all for a campaign to tear down the pyramids
After all they were constructed by slaves. While we are at it, the same applies to all the surviving antiquities
Don’t get me started on the Colosseum, ghastly place, level the fucker and build a wall for the cartoon drawing shitcunt to vandalise with his socially conscious spray paint

Re: Statue Topplers Get Off Scot Free
Probably a generalisation but in Dictatorships it seems statues are erected whilst the subject is still alive and in Democracies the statue turns up some time after the subject’s demise.

In the UK it’s not at all unusual for statues to be entirely or partially funded by public subscription. There is these days also sometimes an amount of soul searching regarding the subject. There were for example some reservations about the, long overdue, memorial to those in bomber command who served in WW2.
